SEVERALLS BOWLS CLUB

We are a small & friendly club for those that wish to take up the sport of lawn bowls with the emphasis on an enjoyable pastime as our events poster states, with regular Friday afternoon club meets & evenings for those that work. For those that wish to bowl more competitively we have mixed teams that enter The Colchester Borough Bowling Association (C.B.B.A.) League which consists of triples on a Tuesday afternoon & fours on a Wednesday evening, with a knock-out competition running throughout the bowling season, these are played against the other nine teams that make up The C.B.B.A.

We also enter a mixed team in The Sudbury Mixed Triples League (S.M.T.L.) where we play against the C.B.B.A. teams plus a further eight teams from south Suffolk & further teams from Essex. These are played in the evenings on an alternating home one season & away the following season, i.e. only one game is played against these clubs in one season.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Severalls Bowls Club was formed in 1923 as part of the sports and social club of Severalls hospital, originally named Severalls Athletic Bowls Club. Eventually the hospital officially closed in 1997 but the bowls club continued to operate, paying a nominal rent to the N.H.S. for the use of the land, carrying out their own maintenance under the expert guidance of the head groundsman of the hospital, also a club member.

The hospital buildings and land soon became derelict, until, in 2018, building permission was granted for three companies to develop the land for housing. Fortunately, for Severalls Bowls Club, there was a covenant on the land the club occupied stating that it should remain a sports facility.

The building companies were not interested in collecting rent, so they persuaded the club to purchase the land. The membership clubbed together and was able to raise sufficient funds for this.

Once all the necessary paperwork was completed and the fees paid Severalls Bowls Club membership are now the official owners of the club. This is very beneficial, as with no rent to pay and all the maintenance carried out by the membership fees are kept to a minimum. The club has also obtained charitable status enabling it to apply for grants to upgrade the ancient facilities. A grant has been applied for and a builder employed to upgrade the changing & toilet facilities with work, hopefully, completed before the start of the 2024 season
